AFRICA IS SEEKING A NEW TYPE OF LEADERSHIP

AFRICA IS SEEKING A NEW TYPE OF LEADERSHIP

Let me begin by saying something you don’t hear very often; we have been indoctrinated with the idea that being a leader is like winning an award. Flattered by the recognition, we lead with dominance, not knowing that leadership is sacrifice, not privilege.

A new type of leader must begin to emerge if the prosperous continent that we all want is to materialize.  Leaders who prioritize the needs of their communities and commit to live beyond themselves.   Beyond titles, they are fully invested in the growth and well-being of the communities to which they belong, pouring their lives into the people. They will make necessary sacrifices because they realize it’s not about them and are not there for themselves.

Responsible leadership and sustainable development are very closely connected.

For sustainable development to be achieved, we need to adopt a people-centered approach that focuses on advancing the human potential by investing in people. This will ensure inclusivity as the people get the chance to contribute to national growth through the use of their unique gifts, and reap benefits for themselves and their communities.  Disparities in wealth among individuals in society may be due to self-enrichment at the expense of others, if the leaders in question have an inflated sense of self-importance.
